Harold Thorell, better known as "Charlie" made his mark in high school, college, and coaching. At Loomis High, he was a 4 -year letter winner in football, track and basketball. Charlie also lettered 2 years in baseball. He was All-State in football his senior year, as well as being Honorable Mention in basketball his senior year.
While at Kearney State Charlie lettered 4 years in football and track and was named All-Conference in football in 1958. He was inducted into the UNK Hall of Fame in 2000. In 1977, he received the Binnie and Dutch Track Award.
In 4 years of coaching at Sumner High, his football teams compiled a 28-7 record. His basketball team had a record of 77-11 with appearances at the State Tournament in 1962 and '64. In track, Sumner was State Cass D Champion in 1964.
Charlie was head track coach at Seward from 1964 - 1997. He coached the team to 8 Conference Relay Championships as well as 8 runner-up finishes. He coached cross-country 20 years and his 1967 team was Class B runners up.
Charlie lives in Seward with his wife Vera. They have 4 children, Shelly, Shane, Travis, and Trent.
